The Open Council is proud to announce that on Thursday, 18 December Newcastle Civic Centre will host a screening of Yoko Ono’s Film No. 5 (Smile) featuring John Lennon.

The film will be seen on the west face of the Civic Centre Tower from 4.30pm to 9.30pm.

The film, created in 1968, was shot with a high-speed camera, records a single smile of John Lennon that evolves over the course of fifty-one minutes.

This outdoor work is presented as part of the exhibition YOKO ONO BETWEEN THE SKY AND MY HEAD on show at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art from Sunday, 14 December and the 2008 NewcastleGateshead Winter festival.

Councillor Pauline Allen, Newcastle City Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Customer Service, said: “Yoko Ono and John Lennon played a major role in the cultural life of not only this country but the whole world, and their influence is still being felt today.”

She added: “As the building celebrates its 40th anniversary I am thrilled the Civic Centre is playing such an important part in this amazing exhibition.”
