Below is a response to a letter sent to the Open Council regarding the announcement of the new 'feminist geographer in residence'. To read Clarencene McIntosh letter click here.

Dear Ms Clarencene McIntosh,

Many thanks for your email in which you raise important equality issues.  The Open Council is committed to equal treatment on the basis of sex, gender, sexuality and politics and welcomes the opportunity which you have given us to clarify our policies in this regard.

As you rightly point out, it would be wholly inappropriate to indicate the sex, gender or sexuality of some of our residents but not others.  We have, as a response to your email set up a committee investigating the options of either 1) always providing these details on all of our residents – eg male, masculine but sensitive, heterosexual post-structuralist pest controller; male, doesn’t cry easily but throws like a girl, heterosexual, Marxist policy officer; female, wears skirts but can open most jars and isn’t afraid of spiders, lesbian, executive; or in the case of our current resident geographer: female, generally perceived as feminine until you get to know her better, heterosexual, feminist post-marxist geographer.  (see table 1 below for clarification) Or 2) only using the residency title.
