Back to normal: Officials soon replaced and reinforced the Sports Direct building after the failure.
Down to earth: This picture was taken moments after the Sports Direct building failed.

Professor of Architecture at Newcastle University, Nial Floss said, "its extremely unusual for a building to fail like this, its as if it just fell like a guillotine. There needs to be a thorough investigation into why the supports on either side of the building gave way at exactly the same time."

Paramedic, Jeff Mackey, was first on the scene:

"I was just in shock but i had to try and focus because we were expecting huge casualties. We rushed around trying to help but everyone was okay."

It was hearts in mouths time in the city centre when the famous Sports Direct building dramatically failed, causing widespread traffic chaos and an amazing sense of disbelief.

Remarkably no casualties were reported either underneath the building or inside the sports shop which was packed with members at the time of the failure.
