City Council Increase Tax

The Open Council must announce that unfortunately a full meeting of Newcastle City Council has agreed to raise council tax in the city by 2.8% for 2009/10.

The 2.8% increase means Newcastle City Council can spend more on services and initiatives including helping more vulnerable people, boosting recycling rates and improving the local environment.

A percentage of the rise will be used to fund prudential borrowing to finance local development projects creating jobs and helping the city's economy.

The rise is 2.2% less than the 5% increase in state pensions and benefits, and is also below the national average. It will equate to an increase of less than 62p per week for the average household.

Newcastle City Council are very, very sorry.
